If your child is under 10, a standard face-to-face appointment will be required for appropriate assessment and treatment.
While the information in this form is still vital for the surgeon to assess your child's fracture, we will not confirm or proceed with a VVHFS appointment for a child under 10 years of age. The Victorian Virtual Hand Fracture Service provides an expert surgeon’s assessment of your hand fracture online via our virtual clinic at melbhandsurg.doxy.me.
This service is a rapid-access virtual private clinic for adults and children aged 10 and over with recent hand fractures, including fingers, thumbs, metacarpals, and carpal bones.
While there are limitations to virtual assessment - including that ligament injuries or subtle rotational deformities not visible on an X-ray may be missed - we recognise that a virtual assessment may offer improved accessibility and early specialist input, particularly for individuals in regional and rural Victoria.

In some circumstances, further imaging or an in-person assessment may be recommended. In complex cases or where surgery is recommended an additional or longer appointment may be required, so that there is adequate time to discuss the process of surgery, the post surgical rehabilitation and the potential surgical complications. If your fracture pattern is straightforward, does not require surgery and does not show delayed healing then this may be the only surgeon appointment that you require during the treatment of your fracture.
About Hand Therapy: Hand therapists are qualified physiotherapists or occupational therapists with specialised expertise in the treatment and rehabilitation of hand injuries, including hand fractures.
Hand therapists play an essential role in fracture management by fabricating custom thermoplastic splints tailored specifically to your hand. These splints help immobilise your fracture appropriately while allowing safe movement and function of the unaffected parts of your hand.
They also guide your rehabilitation following hand fracture, working closely with hand surgeons to optimise recovery, restore function, and support your safe return to work, sport, and daily activities.
Dr Tomlinson works closely with hand therapists across Victoria as part of the Victorian Virtual Hand Fracture Service.
In addition to booking your VVHFS appointment, you may wish to plan ahead by arranging an appointment with a hand therapist, or identifying a provider that is most convenient for you.
Health Insurance Extras Cover: As you have indicated that you hold extras cover with your private health insurer, you may wish to review your policy to determine whether you are covered for physiotherapy and/or occupational therapy.
